Costs

39 Essex Street houses 'the star of the costs Bar', Jeremy Morgan QC. Morgan appears regularly in the Court of Appeal, with 2008 appearances in C v W and Jones v Attrill, the latter case comprising three conjoined appeals testing solicitors' duty to disclose an interest in insurance schemes recommended pursuant to CFA's. The appeal also featured Benjamin Williams, considered one of 'the best costs juniors around', and recent lateral arrival Robert Marven. Williams is a 'creative thinker' and 'a really strong advocate', whilst Marven 'combines intellectual rigour with practicality' and 'presents difficult cost issues in an attractive and nuanced way'. The chambers is noted for its 'strength in depth', with Judith Ayling commended as 'meticulous on detail, with a good commercial perspective' and her fellow Treasury counsel Vikram Sachdeva praised for 'strong analytical ability and excellent interpersonal skills' - with civil and criminal costs expertise.
